You know those pilgrim hats we always associate with Thanksgiving, the ones with the big buckles? Well, it turns out that it wasn’t until later in the 1600s that those became fashionable attire in the New World. The pilgrims that came over on the Mayflower most likely wore floppier (and less dramatic) hats. Nevertheless, the big-buckled hats have become as much an icon at Thanksgiving as turkeys — and besides, what kid wants a floppy hat quesadilla!?

Let’s face it: what’s Thanksgiving for kids? Trick-or-treating is long over, and Santa’s just a glimpse in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Kids might not appreciate all the good food that’ll be at your table, but you can still whip up a fun turkey that they (and maybe some adults) will enjoy! This is also a perfect kitchen project for using up the leftovers as well. {{Full disclosure, though: I haven’t cooked the turkey yet, so technically, the turkey in the photo is made from chicken!}}

Football. Besides turkey, it’s what men think about when you mention Thanksgiving. My husband is no exception. I needed some inspiration this week, so I asked him what he thought I should make in relation to Thanksgiving. He told me either a football or a football helmet. Why didn’t I think of that? Oh yeah, because I’m a woman with three daughters — football isn’t even on my radar! I scoured through pictures of helmets and came up with this snacky replica. So, in honor of my husband and all of you Thanksgiving football families out there, this one’s for you!

We — as in, “we the people” — wouldn’t even be celebrating Thanksgiving if it weren’t for the Wampanoag Indians, who, 400 years ago, were kind enough to show the Pilgrims how to plant corn, wheat, and other crops. Every Thanksgiving our family always finds something to be thankful for. Right now, I’m thankful that my middle daughter’s foot isn’t broken (she has to stay off of it, but it isn’t broken!). Since she’s home from school, I had more time to fix her breakfast this morning. Her request for a bagel with cream cheese turned into a Thanksgiving history lesson about Indians.
Learning can be quite tasty!
