ZORILLA

~ Tortilla ~ Cheese ~ Black Beans ~ Rice ~ Olives ~

ZORILLA NUMMIE

Cut flour tortilla into fourths. Layer shredded cheese on tortilla (underneath the beans so you can’t see it!). Place black beans on top of cheese, and cooked white rice for white hair detail. Add olives for eyes and a piece of cut tortilla for nose. Cheese shreds become the mouth. Heat in a microwave or toaster oven.

INTERESTING FACTS:

• The zorilla is not directly related to the skunk, but sprays a stinky odor similar to a skunk.
• The zorilla is considered by some to be the smelliest animal on earth because its odor can be smelled up to half a mile away.
• The zorilla is also called a polecat.
• Zorillas are almost always alone.
• Zorillas can be found on big sheep farms and ranches of the Kenyan highlands in Africa. They help keep pests from destroying the grass that sheep graze on.

PANGOLIN

~ Tortilla ~ Peanut Butter ~ Frosted Flakes Cereal ~ Raisin ~

I have been learning so much on our alphabetical journey through unusual animals. I have never heard of a pangolin before this. Isn’t he cool? His armor is so neat!

PANGOLIN NUMMIE

Cut a pangolin shape out of a tortilla with scissors. Spread the tortilla with peanut butter (not too thin or the spikes won’t stick!) and add a raisin eye. Stick the frosted flakes (or other flaky cereal) into the peanut butter starting from the tail and moving up the animal, overlapping on each row.

INTERESTING FACTS:

• Pangolins roll up into a ball when attacked.
• “Pangolin” is a Malaysian word for “rolling up into a ball.”
• The scales are made of keratin, the same material your fingernails are made of!
• They can spray a stinky smell, kind of like a skunk.
• They don’t have teeth, but use their claws to tear up their prey (ants or termites) and eat them with a long tongue.

Baby pangolins’ scales are still soft when they are born.

IBEX-idilla

IBEX-IDILLA

Put cheese on tortilla and fold in half. Microwave 30 seconds. Fold tortilla over again (so it’s in quarters).

Cut horns using a bowl as a template. Place bowl over tortilla and cut around it.

Cut remaining tortilla as shown below. Arrange on plate.

Place olive pieces for eyes, nose, and mouth.

• About the Ibex:
• A male ibex’s horns may reach three feet long!
• Ibex is an herbivore (only eats vegetation).
• Older males grow beards.

Tortilla Snowflakes

~ Tortillas ~ Cinnamon ~ Sugar ~

Warm up a tortilla and fold in half and in half again.  Using clean scissors, cut shapes out to create your snowflake.  I used cooking spray then sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on them.  You can also use edible glitter to make them really pretty.  Put them on a cooking sheet and place them in the oven until golden brown.

At least these flurries are warm!!

TIPI

~ Tortilla ~ Cheese ~ Lettuce ~ Carrot ~ Embellishments ~

Cut a tortilla in half.  Cut a triangle shape out of the straight edge of one of the halves and wrap the tortilla around to create a tipi. I used butter to hold the tipi together at the ends.  Sprinkle cheese on the other half and place tipi on top of the cheese.  Place in oven at 350 degrees until cheese is melted and tortilla is crispy.  Once the tipi is out of the oven, use shredded lettuce for the grass, thin carrots for the poles and cereal for embellishments.

Make your own tipi. Be as creative as you can!!
