The Cassowary is a flightless bird from Australia and is one of the largest birds in the world.
Guiness Book of World Records calls it the world’s most dangerous bird.

Cassowary Nummie

Cut a piece of bread as shown:
 

Spread peanut butter, or anything sticky on it.  Cover with raisins {choc chips or olive pieces} for the feathers. Cut pieces off the crust for the rest of the neck and head. Cut a fruit roll-up into strips. {I just cut the blue and red parts out.} Drape the strips over the neck and head, and the red pieces for the wattles.  Using more of the crust create the “helmet”.  I used a purple fruit snack for the beak, but you can use whatever you want.  A piece of a raisin for the eye. Pretzel sticks for the legs and pretzel pieces for the toes.

INTERESTING FACTS

1. Their “helmet” called a casque is used for protection from the heavy underbrush in the rain forest.
2. Cassowaries are solitary animals, meaning they live by themselves most of the time.
3. The famales will lay eggs and then leave never to return.
4. The male will incubate the eggs up to 60 days and then stay with the young for up to 16 months.
5. They can run 30 miles per hr, jump as high as 7 ft, and are really good swimmers.
6. They have 3 forward pointing toes with strong claws to provide grip while running, the inner toe having a 4-5 inch long spike for defensive purposes when it kicks out when cornered.
